PALM DESERT GREENS DEMOCRATIC CLUB

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

FEBRUARY 26, 2010

The meeting was opened by club president Charlie at 9:45 AM, followed by the flag salute and singing of Grand Ole Flag, led by Henry Hoyle.

HEALTH CARE SUMMIT: Members expressed their reactions to Obama’s Health Care Summit held yesterday. The general consensus was pride in the President, but disappointment that not all of the parts we wanted were included in his plan. It was suggested that passing an imperfect health care reform package, by reconciliation, if needed, and then fine tuning it later is the way to go. This led to a discussion of Medicare Advantage, Desert Oasis, Secure Horizons and other local health care choices for seniors.

SECRETARY/TREASURER’S REPORT: The minutes from the Feb. 12 meeting were approved, and Sharon Miller announced the bank balance as $2,159.47, with 64 paid members.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACTION FUND MEETING REPORT: Frances Miller and Sharon Miller thought the meeting was very informative: 93% of Planned Parenthood services are for prevention (education, family planning, Pap checks, gynecological exams, etc.), and only 6% for interventions. Planned Parenthood has prevented more abortions than any other organization. Pro-Choice advocates are the majority in this country, and Planned Parenthood works to elect pro-choice candidates and keep educating them on the issues.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR STATE OFFICE: A move to send $25 to the Courage Campaign to counteract Republican Meg Whitman’s misleading ads for governor was passed.
